BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences

Established on January 18, 1993 and later upgrade to a University on October 1998, B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) is a self-governing, self-reliant international health sciences university with many international teachers and students supporting its education programs. Located in the town of Dharan, in eastern Nepal, BPKIHS works for developing socially responsible and competent health units. Its main objective is to meet the health needs of the eastern Nepal at all three levels that are, primary, secondary and tertiary and in the process, it has extended its services by teaching health consepts and importance to the primary health care centers, district hospitals and the zonal hospitals in six districts of eastern region.



The university named after the late Prime Minister and visionary leader of Nepal Bisheshwar Prasad Koirala (BP Koirala) is one of the largest projects by the Indo-Nepal Co-operation. The area of the hospital that covers around 700 acres is clean and pollution free. There are around 700 beds, facilities of CCU, ICU, VVIP CCA, observational beds, MRI, CT- scan, emergency laboratory, C-arm and mobile x-ray facilities, sterilization section and state-of-the-art operation theaters with recovery rooms with round the clock water and electricity supplies.

The institute offers various academic programs in medical sectors recognized by the medical council of Nepal and India. Some of the programs are MD/MD, M. Sc., and MPH. degrees recognized by the medical council of Nepal and MD/MD degrees in Anesthesiology, Dermatovenerology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Surgery, Radiology, Psychiatry, Medicine, Pharmacology, etc. are recognized by Medical Council of India. The disadvantaged groups are given priority for admissions in most of the academic programs and for the post graduate degrees, candidates who have served in the primary health centers or district hospitals under the government health system are acknowledged.

The MBBS program in BPKIHS is recognized by the Medical Council of Nepal, India and Sri Lanka and the institute is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools by the World Health Organization. Also the Nepal Nursing Council has given recognition to its BSC Nursing program. It also operates BDS program recognized by the Nepal Medical Council and is the only government recognized BDS program in Nepal.

The doctors and nurses produced by the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences are working inside as well as outside Kathmandu at present. It has been able to produce quality health work force and is one of the finest medical schools. Also the wide area of the institute is clean and beautiful.
