The place provides three entry points to Tibet named Kuti through Bigu, Bhote through Lachema and Tibet through Laabagar. The major ethnic and cultural group residing here consists of Newar community and thus, their culture, religion, language and other social systems are practiced here. Also, the famous temple of God Bhimsen in Nepal that is estimated to have been established during the Kirat period is situated in the town. Legend has it that the statue of god Bhimeshwor starts to sweat if anything distinct is going to happen in the country.

The Pandavas are also said to have stayed under round for one year in this place according to the Puranas and while remaining hidden, they are believed to have used a different language for communication which is in today’s context, called the Dolakha Language. This town is situated at one hour walking distance from Charikot and offers the opportunity of observing a typical traditional Newari village. The presence of the famous roofless temple of Dolakha Bhimsen (also known as Bhimeshwor Mahadev) in the eastern upper part of the town also makes the town a popular pilgrimage site. A minibus service takes you from Kathmandu to Dolakha Bhimsen temple and although the god is known as the god of power and traders, rarely are the traders and businessmen seen worshiping the god at the temple.

The small ancient, historically as well as religiously, significant town of Dolakha is easily accessible from Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal through the bus services.
