Fish Fry

Fish is one of the popular meat products in Nepal. Although Nepal is a landlocked country and does not have any sea, it is rich in river resources. People, especially the ones living in Terai loves fish and the fish from some of the rivers of Nepal are very much popular for their rich taste.



One of the many ways to enjoy fish is to eat fish fry. This simple dish is popular in Nepal and is also catered at parties and celebrations. Here is one of the many ways of preparing fish fry.

Ingredients:

1 kg fish, washed and cut into pieces

500 ml oil for deep frying

For marinade:

1 tbsp cumin powder

1 tbsp turmeric powder

2 eggs

5 tbsp all purpose flour (maida)

3 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp yellow mustard seeds, ground and made into fine paste with 2 tbsp water

1 tbsp garlic paste

1 tbsp ginger paste

1 tbsp red chili powder

1 tbsp white sesame (seto til) seeds

1 tbsp salt (or according to your taste)

First of all, take a big mixing bowl and mix all the ingredients used for marinating. Then, add the fish pieces to the marinade and coat the pieces nicely with the spices. Leave it to marinate for about thirty minutes.

Then, heat a pan and add oil to it. When the oil is heated, put the fish pieces one by one, and deep fry them for about ten to fifteen minutes till it is nicely cooked. Be careful as the oil might split while you put the fish pieces into it. When done, serve it with lemon wedges, cucumber and tomato chutney or serve it together with plain rice or even beaten rice.

The fried fish could be used further to make curry as well.
