Institute of Medicine (IOM)

Institute of Medicine (IOM) known as Maharajgunj Medical Campus (MMC) is one and only government medical college in Nepal and also was the first academic institute which had national mandate to train health personnel of different categories  for the delivery of health services to the people of Nepal. Located in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, it was established in 1972 and is affiliated to Tribhuvan University. It also stands as a top most medical college in providing the education to student as well as health facilities to the people. Recognized by Nepal Medical Council, it emphasizes on common health problem of Nepal, early clinical and community exposure with adequate community base learning and integrated approach in teaching and learning.



Being a community centered institution its main objectives are to produce human resource for health services, education of research, continuing medical education to all categories of health workers of Nepal and to contribute in policy development, planning and implementation of health service delivery to both public and private sector. It aims to produce socially responsible and competent physicians who are willing to meet the existing and emerging challenges of National and International health care system.

IOM runs Maharajgunj Medical Campus that offers mainly programs related to health sectors. It offers both medical and paramedical courses. The medical course includes MBBS, BSC Nursing, BASLP, BSC    MIT and BPH and post graduate programs where as paramedical course includes PCL in nursing. MBBS course first was started here in 1978 A.D. and provides 60 seats to students out of which 43 are scholarship and remaining are SAARC quotes. Since then, many of the competent and socially responsible doctors have been produced who are already working in the different sectors. The course in the IOM mainly emphasizes on community issues, making it a place where not only doctors but a socially responsible doctors are produced. This institute has got brilliant academic background with many top students in related field.

The college itself provides other facilities besides studies. It has a huge library, internet facilities, hostel and with different seminar rooms, spacious laboratories, museums, etc. IOM also runs the Teaching Hospital which provides health facilities to many people of Nepal at the affordable prices but with the better health facilities. The candidate for the enrollment in Bachelor level program must pass through a tough entrance examination taken by IOM itself where only few candidates must have passed ISC or 10+2 with 50% aggregate in physics, chemistry and Biology get selected.

IOM being the community oriented institute that was started with Health Assistant program has now grown into a prestigious and renowned institute, the glory of Nepal in producing compassionate and competent Medical graduates to provide health services to people of Nepal and globe as a whole.
