Kanti Children’s Hospital

Established in the year 1963, Kanti Children’s Hospital (KCH) was initially established as a general hospital. The hospital is known locally as Kanti Bal Hospital. Founded under former Soviet aid, it was converted to a children’s hospital in the year 1970. In the same year, the one hundred beds were added to the hospital. The hospital at present has around five hundred beds. Managed by Kanti Children’s Hospital Development Board, an autonomous corporate body under the Ministry of Health (MOH), Government of Nepal, the hospital plans of becoming an independent entity.



The only children’s hospital in the country, Kanti Children’s Hospital provides free medical treatments to poor patients. However, there are certain guidelines to be followed while providing the free medical treatment. Many changes and expertise were made in the field of anesthesiology and surgery by the number of specialized visiting doctors who came from Britain. The Japanese Government became a significant donor and patron of KCH during the year 1986 and 1993. It was then, that the old and outdated equipments were replaced by the Japanese Government and the same government also built infrastructures and other facilities in the year 1993 for the hospital.

Social Action Volunteers KCH unit provides special care, especially to the poor and needy patients by helping them on variety of levels from providing blood or medicine to feeding or transporting the patient home after treatment along with running a playroom for the sick children. The hospital provides immunizations such as BCG, polio, DPT and measles and informal family planning services at free of costs along with providing transportation of patients between Kanti Children’s Hospital and other hospitals or nursing home.

The facilities and services provided by the hospital include 24 hour Emergency services (ten bed observation ward/ thirty bed ORT/ARI ward, oral rehydration therapy/ acute respiratory infections, minor operation theatre, laboratory services and X-ray services with blood bank), OPD (surgical with dressing cum minor operation room, medical and follow up, dental with dental X-ray, Neuro surgery – once a week supported by Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Cardiac OPD twice a week, Nephrology once a week, Physiotherapy, Family planning and immunization, Nutrition counseling cell, play room for children and Pharmacy) and Theatre and Anesthesiology (two major operation theatres, 1 septic operation theatre, 1 minor operation theatre and Anesthesiology department) along with supportive services such as Radiology with EEG/USG and Pathology Services. The hospital also offers other facilities such as Central Sterile Supply Center (CSSD), Enquiry/ Telephone counter, Milk kitchen, Oxygen plant, Laundry, Water Supply and treatment plant, Chemists shop open twenty four hours, canteen, repair and maintenance sections (RAMS), facilities/ accommodation for young mothers and volunteer services sector for poor and helpless visitors.

The ward and departments in the hospital include General pediatric ward, Oncology ward, Cardiac ward, Malnutrition ward, Paying/ Special cabin with 1 isolated bed, Surgical ward, Burn ward, SICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit) and Neonatal/ pediatric care unit (NICU/ PICU). The hospital is situated in Maharajgunj, few meters distance from the American Embassy or the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
