Laa wo Lapi

The Newari community is a rich cultural group with diverse festivals and celebrations. There is at least one puja or a jatra taking place almost every month in the Newari community. However, they are not only rich in terms of cultural festivals and religious rites and rituals but are also rich and popular when it comes to their food habits.



They are rich in terms of food culture with variety of cuisines they make on regular basis or special ceremonies. From appetizers to snacks to meals, there are many Newari cuisines that are not only delicious to eat but also easy to prepare. Various Newari restaurants and Khaja Ghars specialize in Newari cuisines and these recipes are not only popular among the Newars but have also been successful to win the heart of the people belonging to other communities in Nepal. Newari foods, however, often use meat products as it is one of the major ingredients in most of the Newari dishes. One of the many non-vegetarians easy to make snack Newari is Laa wo Lapi, Newari meat patties.

Ingredients:

250 gm kima, minced meat (use any meat you like)

1 tsp salt (or to taste)

¼ tsp cumin powder

1 tsp ginger paste

1 tsp garlic paste

¼ tsp turmeric powder

2 tbsp oil (one tbsp to mix with the meat and the other one to fry)

Procedure

First of all, take a bowl and put the kima (minced meat) in it. Then, add salt, cumin powder, ginger paste, garlic paste, turmeric powder and a tablespoon of oil into it and mix thoroughly. Now, rub oil over your palm and take one tablespoon of the mixed meat in it. Then, make a ball out of it and then flatten it lightly. Keep the flattened meat ball aside and repeat the process with the remaining meat. Now, take a steamer and smear a little oil over it. Place the flattened meat balls in the streamer with a little distance between one another. Put water to boil and when it is boiled, place the streamer over it and cover for about five minutes. When the meat is well steamed, take it out to cool it. Now, heat a pan and add a little oil to it. When the oil is heated, fry the steamed meat for about three minutes and serve your Laa wo Lapi hot with achar or chutney of your choice.
