Nepal Mathematical Society

An association of professional mathematicians dedicated for promotion of mathematical sciences in the country, Nepal Mathematical Society (NMS) was formally founded in January 1979. It was established with the primary aim of enhancing the academic excellence in studying, teaching, research and applications of mathematics by the enthusiastic Nepali mathematicians of the time.



The society aims to preserve and promote the professional ethics, rights and welfare of teachers and researchers of mathematics, to work continuously for promoting mathematics maintaining good relations with the national and international educational and academic organizations and to work for increasing the popularity of mathematics in local levels. The society publishes various annual publications and holds conferences and talk programs at local and international level. Prof. Dr. Dhup Ratana Bajracharya was the first president of the Nepal Mathematical Society (NMS). The establishment of an institute for enhancing mathematical research and education through sound activities was realized in 2019 BS and the informal discussion happened between the enthusiastic mathematicians and students of the Master’s degree program in a picnic in the same year and the society got its legal existence after sixteen years in 2035 BS.

The membership offered at the society is generally of two kinds, general membership which has to be renewed every year by paying a nominal membership fee and life membership which can be obtained by paying the designated fee for lifetime membership. One has to hold a minimum of a Masters degree in mathematical science either from Central Department of Mathematics TU or from other universities recognized by Tribhuvan University to be eligible for the NMS membership.

NMS publishes Nepal Journal of Mathematics, Nepali Mathematical Sciences Report and Nepal Mathematical Society Newsletter that is published annually. The society also organizes seminars, conferences and trainings every year to promote the studies, teaching and research in mathematics and also has a reciprocity relationship with American Mathematical Society.
