Nepali movie Highway

One of the popular Nepali movies, Highway is also the first Nepali movie to be officially selected for and screened at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival. The movie produced by Aadi Productions in association with a New York based company Louverture Films has become successful to capture the attention of the mass audience with its original storyline and wonderful presentation.

The movie represents the story of five passengers travelling from Ilam to Kathmandu in a bus. Their bus faces strike (Nepal bandha), thrice on the way and also the engine of the bus causes problem making them to wait a night in a lonely place. During this time, the stories of each of five passengers are told and it also shows how the delay on the road causes them long-term problems in their lives. The movie has used the contemporary problem of Nepali society, Nepal Bandha for its storyline. It definitely is a major problem in the daily and normal life of the people and the movie also showcases the same thing.

The performances by the actors are good and also the originality in the storyline and script is one of the major strength of the movie. The movie has portrayed the situation in a nice way and also the clean and good cinematography as well as editing makes the movie wonderful in terms of presentation. However, the use of too many characters and sub-stories are quite confusing as they don’t even have proper links to the main theme of the movie. The sound quality and dubbing shows the technical fault in the movie and there are many questions that remain unanswered throughout the movie.

The movie also include some of the famous star casts like Saugat Malla, Dayahang Rai, Binay Shrestha, Karma and Reecha Sharma, however, most of these casts have very little time on screen and their excellent performances are definitely missed by the audience.

It is an art movie that the director has used to portray the consequences and effects of the unlawful strikes taking place in the country. This attempt of the short film director Deepak Rauniyar might be considered as ok as it could not come up to the expectations of the people, however, represented Nepal in an international festival. Hence, although the movie with good storyline failed to keep the audience entertained, it recognized Nepali movies to the international scenario which makes the movie worth a watch.
