photo.circle, a platform for photographers

A platform for emerging and professional photographers in Nepal, photo.circle was established in 2007. The organization, since its establishment, has been working actively to add passion into photography in the country by organizing numerous workshops, exchange programs, exhibitions and publications.



It is committed to enhancing the quality of photo-journalism in the country and its efforts has paid-up with commendable difference seen in the public perception of the power of photographs to tell serious stories within Nepal. Hamro Hajuraama (Our Grandmother), their first publication was focused on capturing images of the elderly women of Nepal. photo.circle has also worked for the preservation of old photographs through its Nepal Picture Library – a photo archive that will be made available to the scholars as well as the viewers. The objective of Nepal Picture Library is to contribute to the study of Nepali photography, generate knowledge and raise questions about how we can explore the issues of memory, identity and history through images.

The organization has open membership system where the photographers (or non photographers) and photography enthusiasts from all walks of life can apply. The charge for the introductory membership fee is Rs. 500 per year and have many benefits attached to it.

The members are eligible to use the photo.circle resource center that offers the photographers with equipments, space and services and a unique connection into the photo.circle community of creators. The facilities that can be accessed at the resource center by the members are work stations (work stations at the office which is equipped with high speed internet access and essential photography software at Rs. 100 per hour), photo studio (fully equipped photo studio with power backup that costs Rs 3000 per day and Rs 5000 per day for non members for rental), photo.circle reference library (stocked with inspiring books, magazines on photography, e-books, films and videos all on photography and remains open to the members from 10 am to 6 pm and on weekends with prior notice), workshop space (a hall with seating capacity for 15 to 20 people with round table style, 30 to 35 people in theatre style and 40 to 50 people with floor seating at Rs 3000 per day for members and Rs 5000 per day for non-members) and scanning facilities (scanning fee on the Rollei DF-S 60 is Rs 25 per scan for members and Rs 50 per scan for non-members while scanning on Hasselblad Flextight X1 costs Rs 150/scan for the members and Rs 250/scan for non members).

Besides these, the members can also sign up for free portfolio reviews by photo.circle staff, local and visiting professional photographers, have access to members-only events including discussions, lectures and presentations, be featured on the website members gallery, discounts on workshops and publication and assistance in their personal website development. It is a platform provided to the photography enthusiasts, be it professional or amateur, and is one of its kind in Nepal, working for the promotion and preservation of photography and photographs in Nepal.
