Pokhara University

Established in 1997 under Nepal Government’s policy of adopting multi-university system with an aim to expand the access to higher education, Pokhara University is an independent institution for higher education. However, it has been operating with financial sources generated by the University itself and partly by Nepal Government’s budget through the University Grant Commission.



The position of the Chancellor and the Pro-Chancellor of the University are held by the Prime Minister and the Education Minister, respectively. The Vice Chancellor serves as the principal administrator of the University and the registrar is the financial administrative head of the university. The central office of the University is located in Lekhnath Municipality-12 in Kaski District in the western development region in Nepal.

The university was started with an objective of providing the quality education, expanding the opportunity of higher education in the country, supply skilled human resources necessary for national development, enhance flexibility and freedom in academic programs in the University and increase private participation in higher education. To produce skilled human resources necessary for the national development by providing quality education is its major objective and to achieve it, the University has started semester system based curriculum and evaluation process which is carried out with high priority to practical knowledge and researches.

The major activities of the University includes starting its academic activities as guided by the Pokhara University act 1996, developing three constituent academic institutions where Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree programs are conducted and the University has given affiliation to around 49 colleges for Bachelor, Master and M. Phil degree programs. The semester system that the University has adopted been applied to all the degrees. The Bachelor degrees are of four years that are extended in eight semesters and the Master degree of two years into four semesters with M Phil degree of one and half year into three semesters.

The University has three faculties that are Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Management Studies and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. There are various programs and courses for undergraduate, graduate and post graduate levels offered at the various colleges affiliated to the university. The Controller of Examinations is responsible for examinations and other such ceremonies and programs.

Pokhara University has gained popularity in recent years and it is among the few Universities that are active in Nepali educational system. The four constituent colleges of Pokhara University are the School of Health and Allied Sciences for science and technology, School of Engineering for engineering, School of Business for Management and School of Development and Social Engineering for Humanities.
