Sita Maiya Rajchal dedicated towards instrumental music

A fine musician doing instrumental music for more than two decades, Sita Maiya Rajchal started practicing music at the tender age of 8 years. Covering the duration between her two albums The Tradition (2005) and Talking Strings (2012), she has come along a long way and never for a moment has she ever had enough of music. Devoted totally to music, this gold medalist in Music wants to do the same in future as well.

An avid lover and player of Sitar, there isn’t a single day when she doesn’t play it. And if someday, she couldn’t play it, she would just wake up in the middle of the night and play it, only then she can sleep peacefully. It sounds strange but this is what you call a connection musicians could have with their instruments.

She credits her father for her attachment and accomplishments in music as it all started when her father, fond of music himself, started taking harmonium courses at home. He encouraged all of them to take the course and it was then, she developed her interest in music. She has completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music. Although the current scenario of instrumental music does not seem good, she believes that professionalism and sincerity is the key to solve the problem.

She performs thrice a week on Thamel and sometimes goes to her husband’s restaurant to offer him help. Apart from that, all she does is practicing and creating music. Most of her time is totally devoted to music. It is difficult for instrumental music to foster as only limited people, especially the old generation, are into it. And besides, the major cities like Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur, the market is not so good as only four to five percent of the new generation show interest in such events or field.

In instrumental music, it is essential that you express your feelings through music, be it sadness or happiness, an instrumental musician should be able to do it. This is what differentiates instrumental music from commercial music that uses words to express feelings. One of the best instrumental musicians in Nepal, Sita Maiya Rajchal wants to continue doing instrumental music in future as well.
