Established with a mission of delivering sustainable microfinance services at the doorstep of the deprived sector target societies, Swabalamban Laghubitta Bikas Bank Limited was registered as a limited company under the Company Act 2053 BS on October 5, 2001. The bank has obtained license from Nepal Rastra Bank to operate the financial activities under the Development Bank Act 2052 BS on January 2002.


The bank changed its name to Swabalamban Laghubitta Bikas Bank Limited on January 2006 under the Company Act and re-obtained license from Nepal Rastra Bank and Bittiya Sanstha Ordinance 2005. The bank was established with the vision of contributing to establish poverty free prosperous society and the mission of uplifting socio-economic condition of rural and urban disadvantaged poor by providing easy access to microfinance services.est

The bank was established with the major objective of providing the disadvantaged section of the rural poor with easy access to credit, which will help them to uplift their socio-economic status and make the full use of their existing skills and resources. Its objectives also include providing credit support to low income people for promoting various income raising activities by mobilizing local capital, indigenous skills and labor, raising production and productivity of poor communities by utilizing their skills and resources, providing the poor people with capital to encourage them to undertake productive enterprises, mobilizing rural savings and strengthening credit delivery system to help increase productive assets of the poor people and making the poor communities aware and conscious among the poor communities on the need and importance of self-help development.

The establishment of the bank goes back to the time when CSD (Center for Self-help Development) started Self-help Banking Program (SLBP), a microfinance program based on Grameen Financial System which began the program with the support of Grameen Trust, Bangladesh.


CSD took the initiative to promote Swabalamban Bikas Bank Limited (SBL Bank) with an aim to provide the poor women with more sustainable microfinance services and enhance the credibility of the institution. The bank took over the micro financing activities as well as the assets and liabilities of CSD-SLBP from all eight districts with the objective of operating microfinance program in a more sustainable and formal way.

The bank provides financial as well as non-financial services such as pre-group training, refresher training, skill development training, leadership and management training, exposure visits, non-formal education, centre chief’s review meeting, health and hygiene orientation and others.
