Thamel House Restaurant

Housed in a 19th century pagoda style building, Thamel House Restaurant has been catering the traditional Nepali and Newari cuisine for more than 16 years. Established by Narendra Man Singh, the restaurant aims to provide the taste of traditional Nepali and Newari cuisines to the tourists in the Thamel area.

He wishes to set right the inaccurate perception of Nepali food for those who have tried it before along with giving the travelers an opportunity to taste Nepali food. The restaurant is popular among the foreigners who want to taste the traditional Nepali food and also those who had come here more than a decade ago remembers the taste and visit again. The building that houses the Thamel House is around 130 years old and it clearly stands out among the modern concrete structures. The owner’s family has lived here for several generations for over 105 years, however, the house’s deteriorating condition forced them to either dismantle it or restore it. Following his brother-in-law’s suggestion, he decided to renovate the house and now, the partitioned room on the second level serves as spacious dining areas. The bamboo and bitumen replaced the old wooden ceiling beams and the home kitchen transformed into the restaurant’s unique Buingal Bar.
