Established in 1973 with the major motto of providing best possible quality education, SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, located in Sanothimi, was named after the name of Prof. Hermann Gmeiner, the founding father of SOS Children’s Village International. The pioneer in the development of SOS Hermann Gmeiner Schools in Nepal, it is one of the subsidiary facilities of SOS Children’s Village Nepal.

Located in Sanothimi adjacent to the SOS Children’s Village, it is approximately ten kilometers east from the center of the capital city. It is situated in about 40 ropanies of land including the secondary and primary wings that are separately located to the either side of SOS Children’s Village. The site was donated by the Nepalese government and it was established at the time when Sanothimi was a rural set-up unlike a town or a part of city it has become today.

SOS Hermann Gmeiner School was established initially as an elementary school with seventy five students and almost all SOS Children. The school started moving towards its upgrading and expansion as per the changed policy of SOS Children’s Village and the acute need of the local community. It was upgraded to the secondary school in 1989 prior to which it was only a lower secondary school. The school remained as a secondary school until 1998 when it was upgraded to a higher secondary school. This fully functional school has about sixty six teaching and non-teaching staffs catering to more than eight hundred students from Nursery (4+) to Class 12 (18+).

The school also serves as a joining bridge between SOS Children’s Village and the local community and out of 825 students here, 675 of them are from the neighboring community and only about 150 are the SOS children. The school has spacious and well ventilated classrooms, well stocked library, science lab and computer lab with internet facilities and the school charges nominal fees compared to the other private schools in Nepal and it also provides scholarships to the deserving students. The SOS Hermann Gmeiner School also has its branches at other towns and cities of Nepal like Bharatpur, Gandaki, Itahari, Kavre, Lumbini, Pokhara and Surkhet.
